An excellent community fish for peaceful tetras, Corys, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, and other small, non-aggressive species. Keep in a group of at least 8–10. Males may establish small territories and display toward each other without usually causing injury.

Keep in a mature, well-planted aquarium with soft, stable water, gentle-to-moderate flow, sand, driftwood, and shaded areas. This species can be sensitive to elevated nitrate and sudden changes in water chemistry. A dark substrate and subdued lighting help enhance its vivid coloration.
